and a Four Day Radon Test

Placing a tide chart over a radon test showed high and low radon closely matching high and low tides.  As the heaviest gas in the atmosphere, it was still surprising to see tidal gravity impacting radon gas readings inside an upscale residential finished basement.  This was the compelling discovery that forced recognition that radon was an aggressive contaminant, needing mechanical controls to keep it out of indoor living space.

Radon Gas fluctuates with the weather and tidal gravity.  It is therefore difficult to differentiate between natural fluctuations, and changing environmental conditions.   This makes testing radon cumbersome.  Laboratory testing was designed to isolate the radon inside a circulation chamber.  Radon was mechanically generated by pumping air through naturally radioactive shale from a local road cut.

RADON TESTING SUMMARY:

The reduction of the ~40.0 pCi/L radon level to 0.2 pCi/L in 5 hours is significant.  EPA published guidance indicates that radon reduction below 2.0 pCi/L is difficult to maintain with state of the art reduction methods.  Hopefully, manufacturing streamlined components will improve vortex extraction performance.  The fact that radon is about 8 times heavier than fresh air makes centrifugal separation viable.  The inventor had observed Steel Mill cyclone separators removing steel grit from rolling mill cooling water.  It is interesting to note that steel is also about 8 times heavier than water.
